Cozy or pants-down drunk. You have choices!

First we had the Danish “HYGGE” for the 2016-19 “nesting” trend, then Ikea-Style Swedish “LAGOM” for plandemic comfort and “staycationing”, now the Finnish “KALSARIKANNIT” for surviving the raw hellscape of exposed jab-killing elites, WEF and WHO-ruined economies and the specter of thermo-nuclear annihilation!

OK, Let’s get Cozy and examine our new options:

Enter Kalsarikannit. Why many people prefer the rugged realness of Päntsdrunk. 

Hygge’s Great, But What About Kalsarikannit – The Finnish Word for Staying at Home Alone & Getting Drunk in Your Underwear.

Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world for three years now and I’m betting that Kalsarikannit has something to do with it. Kalsarikannit, or ‘Päntsdrunk’, the anglicised term, literally means getting drunk in your underwear alone at home. 

“In Finland, Päntsdrunk is considered the path to recovery and self-empowerment to help you face your future challenges, much like the ‘Lagom’ [see below] or ‘Hygge’ of their Scandi neighbours.” 

Like hygge, it is still all about feeling comfortable, warm, and contented, indulging in some alone time doing what you like and letting go of work stress.

But Päntsdrunk essentially switches out the mug of hot chocolate used in hygge with a multipack of beer.

Finnish people are big drinkers, so päntsdrunk allows them to drink in a warm home in comfortable clothing rather than having to pile on multiple layers to go out to a bar when it is freezing cold outside.

While staying in at home with a bottle of wine, takeaways and a Netflix subscription is something some us might feel a bit embarrassed about, in Finland, the practice is as well-respected as mindfulness. Rather, it’s an authentic, easy and enjoyable way to slow down and take time for yourself without worrying about anything else. 

Hygge, on the other hand, is a very Instagrammable, and some would say curated notion of relaxation, which is why many people prefer the rugged realness of Päntsdrunk.

“Perhaps the best part about the Päntsdrunk trend is that it will cost you close to nothing to carry out. All you have to do is grab a bottle of wine (or another cocktail of choice) and find your way to a Netflix subscription. You don't even need pants, people.

Päntsdrunk, on the other hand, seems to be a lifestyle trend that's for the people, by the people.

How to päntsdrunk

If drinking at home in your underwear sounds like your perfect way to unwind, it isn’t that hard to do. Simply get your drink of choice, your most comfortable underwear, some snacks and your favourite movie or TV show. There are no set rules for päntsdrunking so if you want to wear more layers, invite friends over or drink something non-alcoholic, then that’s fine, too. Finnish people often use hot apple cider or glögi, the Finnish variant of mulled wine.

Getting rid of your stress this way can even help you to feel healthier and more energised during the rest of the day. Next time somebody calls you out for drinking in front of the television, you can simply tell them that you are trying out a new Nordic wellness trend.
