My fourth Science Moment episode of nearly 400 from November 2020 where I discuss two reasons why people mistakenly believe they understand complex systems, which is one big factor in why even the “experts” had the hubris to believe they can wisely restructure society to stop a respiratory virus. The first reason concerns self-organization, something that requires understanding complex emergent processes, and that’s deeply counterintuitive. Even experts are terrible at that. The second reason concerns the evolutionary selection processes that shape and design things, including the structures within society. Society at any given time is teeming with design that has been selected for without any individual or group realizing that the design is even there. Muck with the system, and chances are you will push the system away from its local optimum, and induce great harm. Especially if it’s in a hurry and the decision-makers are in a righteous groupthink.
