Good on you! Did you realize that the sailors of old had to constantly adjust course in order to sail the most direct (great circle) line for long distances rather than just set compass for, say, East Northeast (rhumb line)? I can't even do the hornpipe. I didn't fully appreciate this.

I did know that. Check out the Master and Commander novels by Patrick O'Brian. Those old seafarers had to know their stuff. I've also read a few books on modern sailing, and have fantasized about leaving it all behind and spending the rest of my life on a sailboat....

That sounds great, except for the proliferation of pirates and being able to arm only with a flare gun in most ports these days😞
