Do you remember camping back before modern waterproof fabrics when you were forbidden to touch the tent or else it would leak?
For me, no camping (or now, “glamping”) trip is complete without the soft roaring hiss of a Tilley lamp hung nearby.
These (kerosene/paraffin), and the modern propane versions are surprisingly bright, and cheap to operate.
Some of my best childhood memories are of camping, mostly fueled by bottled propane which is safe, portable, light and unlike gasoline, does not “expire”.
You can run small fridges, and get heat, light, cooking and just about anything else.
Here's a great overview that will also trigger some great memories.
Bonus:
Sound of a “modern” Coleman lantern:
Ok, here's the sound of double mantled old-school “Tilley” lamp:
Amongst all the LED lanterns and even a few fluorescents from AC power, one troop from Delaware had an old Coleman dual mantle going.
Reminded me of the 80s and I was glad I dropped in on them one evening a couple weeks ago.
The smell and the hiss! Ahhh such great memories, thank you!
(And the torture of changing the mantle!)
