When It’s Finished, The Great American Rail Trail Will Be The Longest Bike Trail In The USA
UPDATED
The Great American Rail Trail is already half complete and open for visitors to begin the adventure of cycling across the country.
It will be the longest bike trail in the world when complete - being even longer than the 3,000-mile-long Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (from Canada to Mexico).
It will be some time before the Great American Rail Trail is complete, but there are many other smaller rail trails that are open for business. In Pennsylvania, visitors should explore the Ghost Town Trail and discover many abandoned coal towns lost to the forests after the coal mines and railroad were abandoned.

How To Take a HikeA guide to America's best day hikes

It will be so great to not be on roads with cars. Took a bike trip to the beach from Portland OR (only about 100 miles), most of the trip is on US 26. There are some serious hills as you descend and lots of nice gravel on the sides where you are riding. So, you are flying down loooong inclines on gravel where you cannot practically slow down or stop (or burn out your brakes) and you cannot deviate from the gravel as it is a highway. If you can avoid crashing it is hella fun, but it was actually scary, and I wouldn't do it again (alone).
